What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the condition of excess breast tissue, localized fat, and skin that develops on the male chest. While it is relatively common, it is often the source of serious emotional and psychological distress. Gynecomastia presents itself on a scale of severity, but when it affects how you feel about yourself and limits what you do with your life, it is important to seek treatment.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can impact males of any age and can be the result of:
  • Hormonal
  • changes
  • Genetics
  • Obesity or weight loss
  • Certain medications
  • Other unknown causes

Before you are cleared for plastic surgery, you will undergo a full workup to help determine the cause of your gynecomastia. While most cases are benign and have no known cause, it is very important to seek the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon to rule out more serious but rare causes.

How Is Gynecomastia Treated?

Gynecomastia correction surgery is a restorative procedure for men and teens with gynecomastia or enlarged male breasts. As long as there is no underlying cause that must be treated prior to plastic surgery, gynecomastia correction surgery is an excellent, permanent treatment option for gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia correction surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that involves the removal of excess glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or skin from the chest. If necessary, your Atlanta board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephanie Farber, will reposition the areolae and nipples to ensure your results are natural-looking and provide the masculine physique and appearance you hope to achieve.

Gynecomastia Correction Surgery Procedure Overview

How your gynecomastia correction surgery in Atlanta, GA will be performed is dependent on the specifics of your unique surgical plan. When you arrive on the day of your surgery, you will be escorted to a private room where you will be prepped for surgery. Once you’re ready, Dr. Farber will sit down with you to give you one more opportunity to express your goals so that you can go into surgery feeling confident that she understands your vision and will execute it. She will thoughtfully mark your chest appropriately for surgery and confirm every detail with you.

If you are having liposuction, Dr. Farber will insert a small cannula, or a thin hollow tube, into the tissue through small incisions. She will then move the cannula around to loosen the excess fat and remove it via suction. If Dr. Farber has determined that an excision technique is best for you to remove excess glandular tissue and skin, she will make the appropriate incisions to remove the tissue, use liposuction to remove fatty tissue if necessary, and, in some cases, remove and reposition the areolae and nipples.

Dr. Farber has fine-tuned her gynecomastia correction surgery technique to ensure the best results for each individual patient. Her specialized technique and eye for artistry and balance provide patients with a masculine, sculpted chest.

During surgery, Dr. Farber will administer a long-acting numbing agent to make your recovery more comfortable. She will then place a long-lasting surgical dressing designed to decrease skin tension, reducing the amount of visible scarring. Before you are discharged, Dr. Farber will fit you with a compression garment to protect the treatment area and ease pressure on your incisions.

As soon as your surgery is completed, you will be taken to a private recovery room where you will wake up to friendly faces cheering you on as you get your first glimpse at your new chest so you can go home feeling empowered and supported.

What to Expect from Your Gynecomastia Recovery

Dr. Farber uses a rapid recovery protocol that helps patients recover quickly and without the need for narcotic pain medications. You can expect your pain to be manageable without the side effects of narcotics. Most people start feeling like themselves again after one week and are back to their normal routines and activities after about a month.

Tips for a Smooth Gynecomastia Correction Surgery Recovery

Gynecomastia FAQs

What causes gynecomastia?

There are many causes of gynecomastia, but most cases are what is considered idiopathic, meaning that the cause cannot be identified. It is very important to see a board-certified plastic surgeon for evaluation in order to rule out any other, more serious causes of gynecomastia. These other causes are rare but are very important to identify.

Gynecomastia is the development of any excess tissue in the male chest. It is a spectrum of concerns that can range from a small amount of excess fibrous tissue to a larger amount of excess tissue with excess skin as well. Virtually any male who is unhappy with the appearance of his chest is a candidate for some type of gynecomastia correction surgery.

Gynecomastia is very common and exists on a spectrum of severity. Though a lot of boys and men do not feel comfortable talking about it, it is fortunately very common for them to seek correction.

Depending on what procedures are involved in your specific gynecomastia correction surgery, you may typically begin working out again just a few weeks after surgery.

The length of surgery depends on the procedures being performed. If only fibrous tissue is being removed, this can often be done fairly quickly while awake in the office if patients prefer. If skin and tissue have to be removed, the surgery can be slightly longer and is best done asleep in the operating room.

After gynecomastia surgery, patients normally feel back to themselves within a week and can resume their normal activities in less than a month. Pain is typically very manageable as well, as I like to use a special rapid recovery protocol that minimizes both pain and the need for narcotics after surgery. Without all the narcotic side effects, patients can return to normal much more quickly.

Any tissue that is removed, whether it is skin, fat, or fibrous tissue, is removed permanently. All of my patients undergo a full evaluation to make sure that no underlying cause of gynecomastia needs to be treated. Once we make sure of this, as long as patients maintain their same level of good health, then there is no reason that any of the tissue would grow back.

The amount of scarring depends on what type of surgery is needed. If only fibrous tissue needs to be removed, this can usually be done through a small incision that is easily camouflaged along the border of the areola. If you have extra skin, sometimes additional incisions are needed. We discuss all of this in detail before deciding which procedure is best for you.
