What Is a Thigh Lift?
Thigh lift, medically known as thighplasty, is a procedure designed to reshape the thighs by removing excess fat and skin to achieve a more toned appearance. This procedure can be performed to address the outer or inner thighs or both. To deliver an optimal outcome, Dr. Farber typically pairs thigh lift surgery with liposuction or skin-tightening treatments for a balanced, more harmonious look.
- Medial Thigh Lift: Focuses on skin in the inner thigh
- Mini Thigh Lift: Addresses the upper portion of the inner thigh
- Outer Thigh Lift: Treats skin on the outer thigh
- Eliminating stubborn fat pockets
- Tightening loose skin
- Reducing the appearance of stretch marks
- Addressing chafing, discomfort, and hygiene concerns
- Minimizing the risk of infection or skin irritation
- Allowing for easier physical activity
It’s important to note that rather than a weight loss solution, thigh lifts are a body-contouring procedure. As such, eligible candidates should be at or near their ideal and sustainable weight. During your consultation, Dr. Farber will discuss your potential outcome and your expectations to ensure they are realistic and anatomically achievable.

Thigh Lift Procedure Overview
On the day of your thigh lift in Atlanta, GA, you will be escorted to a private room where you will be prepared for surgery. Once you’re ready, Dr. Farber will give you another opportunity to express your goals and priorities so that you can go into surgery feeling confident that she understands your vision and will execute it. She will thoughtfully mark your thighs for surgery and confirm every detail with you.
Once you are comfortably sedated and prepped in the operating room, Dr. Farber will often begin with liposuction to ensure smoother contours. According to the customized plan developed during your consultation, Dr. Farber will create the appropriate incisions to address the excess tissues. Then, she will remove excess skin and fat to reshape the thighs and create a smoother, more toned appearance.
During surgery, Dr. Farber will administer a long-acting numbing agent to make your recovery more comfortable. She will then place a long-lasting surgical dressing designed to decrease skin tension, reducing the amount of visible scarring. Before you are discharged, Dr. Farber will fit you with compression garments to support your toned legs.
As soon as your thigh lift is completed, you will be taken to a private recovery room where you will wake up to friendly faces cheering you on as you get your first glimpse at your slimmer legs. Before you are released to go home, you will feel excited and supported, knowing that Dr. Farber and her team will be by your side throughout your recovery.
What to Expect from Your Thigh Lift Recovery
Dr. Farber uses a rapid recovery protocol that helps patients recover quickly while minimizing the need for narcotic pain medications. She utilizes several medications to reduce pain in the hope that you will experience a manageable amount of pain while reducing narcotic side effects. Generally, patients take a week or two off work to rest and recover and are back to their normal routines and activities within a month.
Following a thigh lift, you can expect some swelling and bruising, which should subside within a few weeks. Avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, running, or weightlifting, for at least a month. Carefully follow Dr. Farber’s recommendations for optimal recovery.

- Avoid heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks or until Dr. Farber clears you.
- Prioritize a balanced, nutritious diet to ensure your body has everything it needs to heal.

Alpharetta, GA, Thigh Lift FAQs with Dr. Farber
When can I sit after a thigh lift?
Most patients are able to sit and walk immediately following a thigh lift. It’s important to avoid strenuous movements or stretches that may impact the incisions and recovery.
How should I prepare for my thigh lift consultation? Do I need to lose weight?
The best way to prepare for a consultation for any procedure is to have a clear idea of your goals for surgery, which will help us make the best plan together. Also, it is important to be in good health, to eat a diet high in protein, exercise regularly, and be close to a weight that you would be comfortable and happy maintaining for the rest of your life. All of this helps you be in optimal shape for surgery!
Will a thigh lift help me lose weight?
A thigh lift is a body-contouring procedure rather than a weight loss solution; however, many people have an easier time exercising after surgery because they have less discomfort and feel more confident overall. This confidence can sometimes accelerate your weight loss and toning efforts.
What should I expect on the day of my thigh lift procedure?
You will arrive at the surgery center on the day of surgery to complete all the preoperative preparations. While this is underway, I will come to see you, and we will review markings, confirm our surgical plan, and answer any final questions. Usually, we both feel even more excited for surgery after we see each other that day! You will head back to the operating room and will wake up in the blink of an eye once your surgery is over. After waking up in the recovery room, you will get up to walk and change prior to going home.
Will I have drains after a thigh lift? How long will I have drains?
Often, I prefer to use drains because they make the result safe, predictable, and beautiful. The length of time you will have drains depends on many factors, including how much tissue was removed, whether you had liposuction, and how much protein you get in your diet. Usually, drains will only be in for a couple of weeks or less, and they will prevent problems during recovery and make the results long-lasting.
Will sutures need to be removed after a thigh lift?
I only use absorbable sutures that are underneath the skin, so you should never even see your sutures. I also use a dressing that stays on until the incisions are healed, so you will not have to perform any dressing changes either.
How long will post-surgery swelling last after a thigh lift?
Swelling can last varying amounts of time depending on many factors. In general, swelling starts to subside after about 2 to 3 weeks. After about 6 weeks, most of the swelling will have dissipated, but the residual swelling will continue to subside for a few more months.
Can I have a full-body sculpting at the same time as a thigh lift?
Liposuction can safely and strategically be combined with a thigh lift. Some patients choose to have liposuction on other areas or other body contouring procedures, such as a body lift, arm lift, tummy tuck, or breast procedures. I am always careful to remain within the safe limits for how much surgery or liposuction can be performed at one time.
