How Do I Know a Breast Reduction Is Right for Me?

If you have physical, emotional, or functional symptoms as a result of your breast size, a breast reduction could be life-changing for you. A breast reduction is often recommended for people who are in physical pain or discomfort from the size and weight of their breasts. However, anyone who wants to decrease their breast size and balance their figure more proportionately is a good breast reduction candidate.

Ideal breast reduction candidates in Alpharetta, GA are:

  • Generally healthy enough for surgery
  • Have a clear vision of their ideal outcome and realistic expectations about what a breast reduction can accomplish
  • Understand the surgical risks and benefits

Preparing for Your Breast Reduction Consultation

One of the best ways to prepare for your breast reduction consultation in Atlanta, GA is to get excited about the life-changing experience you are about to have. It is helpful to review your specific goals and be able to articulate how you want to look and who you want to be after plastic surgery. For example, you could say things like:

  • I want to be able to bounce in the bounce house with my kid and only wear one sports bra.
  • I want to be able to run, play sports, and work out with ease, not discomfort.
  • I want to be able to walk into a store and know I will find clothes that are flattering and make me feel good.

Your reasons for wanting a breast reduction will be personal to you, and being able to articulate your vision in this way will help Dr. Farber understand your motivation and goals better. Your possibilities are endless!

Preparing for Your Breast Reduction in Atlanta

  • Make sure you are hydrated by drinking plenty of water the day before your surgery.
  • Fill all of your prescription medications and have them ready for when you get home.
  • Make sure you have nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the night before your surgery.
  • Shower and wash your body with an antibacterial soap.
  • Do not wear makeup, lotions, skincare products, or deodorants to your surgery.
  • Come dressed in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will be easy to put on after surgery. Do not wear jewelry, or contact lenses to your surgery.

  • Prepare healthy, balanced meals ahead of time so that you can maintain a well-balanced diet high in protein during your recovery.
  • Arrange for help around the house and with child or pet care if necessary.
  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin or herbal supplements that can increase bleeding risk.

Breast Reduction Procedure Overview

On the day of your breast reduction surgery in Atlanta, GA, you will be escorted to a private room where you will be prepped for surgery. Once you’re ready, Dr. Farber will come sit down with you to give you one more opportunity to express your goals and priorities so that you can go into surgery feeling confident that she understands your vision and will execute it. She will thoughtfully mark your breasts for surgery and confirm every detail with you.

Once you are comfortably sedated and prepped in the operating room, Dr. Farber will perform your breast reduction using her unique technique that removes excess skin and tissue from the lower and outer parts of your breast and preserves the tissue in the upper middle part, also resizing your areolas in proportion with your new, smaller breast. She has finely tuned this specialized technique to give her patients the best breast reduction result possible, thoughtfully removing the breast tissue that is responsible for making your breasts look heavier and leaving the breast tissue that makes them look smaller and naturally lifted.  During surgery, Dr. Farber will administer a long-acting numbing agent that lasts for 2-4 days to make your recovery more comfortable. She will then place a long-lasting surgical dressing designed to decrease skin tension, reducing the amount of visible scarring. Before you are discharged, Dr. Farber will fit you with a surgical bra to support your new breasts.

As soon as your breast reduction is completed, you will be taken to a private recovery room where you will wake up to friendly faces cheering you on as you get your first glimpse at your new breasts so you can go home feeling excited and supported.

What to Expect from Your Breast Reduction Recovery

Most patients are surprised by how smooth breast reduction recovery is. Following your breast reduction, you will experience an immediate relief of back and neck pain and other symptoms of overly large breasts. Dr. Farber will provide you with a bra that clasps in front and provides gentle compression, which offers support for your new breasts and helps relieve some of the pressure on your incisions.

After about one week, most people start feeling like themselves again. After about a month, most people are back to their regular activities and routines.

Tips for a Smooth Breast Reduction Recovery
  • Enjoy the immediacy of your breast reduction results!
  • Your surgical dressing will stay in place for 2 to 3 weeks, and you will be able to shower shortly after surgery. Less maintenance at home means you have more time to focus on resting, relaxation, and self-care. You should wear your surgical bra at all times during recovery to support your breasts.
  • Prioritize a balanced, nutritious diet to make sure your body has everything it needs to heal.
  • As soon as you can, take light, gentle walks to improve blood flow.
  • Arrange for help around the house and with any pet or childcare while you recover.

Breast Reduction FAQs

How big do my breasts need to be to get a reduction?

Rather than using a specific size to determine whether my patients would benefit from a reduction, I prefer to use their symptoms. In my opinion, if you are having physical, emotional, or functional symptoms due to your breasts, a breast reduction will be life-changing for you! These symptoms can include back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, grooves from bra straps, skin irritation underneath or between your breasts, discomfort with physical activity, difficulty finding clothes that fit, or even just feeling insecure and self-conscious. I have seen each of these concerns be alleviated by having a breast reduction, regardless of initial breast size.

If your breast size has been relatively stable prior to surgery, it is not likely that you will see a significant change after surgery. That said, women’s breast sizes fluctuate with weight changes, hormone changes, pregnancy, menopause, and other lifelong factors. While your breast size and shape will still evolve over time, having tissue removed and having your breasts lifted will make any future changes to the size and shape of your breasts more manageable.

Breast reduction surgery can be a very powerful gateway to weight loss. It allows patients to exercise more easily and more comfortably. I do not require a certain weight for surgery, but being in good general health definitely helps make for a smoother surgery and recovery. Insurance companies, however, do have certain requirements regarding weight and the amount of breast tissue that must be removed.

Yes! Skin and breast tissue are both removed as part of a breast reduction. Also, I would never operate on someone without giving them the absolute best result that I possibly can, which means you can expect to have beautiful, lifted breasts!

Most patients say that the recovery is easier than expected. I believe this is because they experience immediate relief of their neck and back pain, or other symptoms they had from their large breasts. Usually, within a week or so, patients feel like themselves again, and they can get back to normal activity in one month. Seeing and feeling the result right away definitely helps with the recovery!

I give my patients a surgical bra that closes in the front and provides gentle compression.  Some patients like to purchase additional, similar bras once they are able to find a comfortable fit.

Yes! The tissue and skin that are removed are gone forever. However, we all experience weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and normal aging that can change the appearance of our breasts over time. Breast tissue is more resistant to these changes when there is less of it, so you will enjoy the result of your surgery forever!

You can expect to experience renewed self-confidence, improved posture, bigger smiles, and an overall more positive attitude! Patients tell me that they become more active, energetic, comfortable, and happy after having a breast reduction. It is fun to see some of these “side effects” (like the smile and the posture) in the ‘After’ picture, along with the smaller and more lifted breasts.

All surgery causes discomfort, but breast reduction surgery actually relieves a lot of discomfort in areas like the neck, back, and shoulders. I also have a very specific rapid recovery protocol that helps people feel more comfortable after surgery.

Most breast reductions do not disrupt the connection between the milk ducts and the nipple, so breastfeeding will likely still be possible. However, it is important to keep in mind that not all women can breastfeed, even if they have not had a breast reduction. Because breast tissue and milk ducts are removed as part of the surgery, there is always a possibility that a breast reduction could impact breastfeeding potential.

I am a big believer in the importance of wearing a bra! If you hang a heavy evening gown in your closet for a long time, the fabric will stretch. The same happens to your skin, which is the only thing holding your breasts in place. The best way to prevent future sagging is to protect the skin with good support. A supportive bra does not have to be uncomfortable, so we can work together to find a bra that works for you!
